Intravenous/General Anesthesia Pre-Operative Instructions 

  1. PRESCRIPTIONS for antibiotics, swelling and pain management are for after surgery unless otherwise directed.  PLEASE FILL PRESCRIPTIONS WITHIN 14 DAYS, AS THEY WILL EXPIRE.
  2. All patients must have NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK (INCLUDING WATER) FOR 8 HOURS prior to the scheduled appointment.
  3. A responsible adult (18 years or older) must accompany the patient to the office, REMAIN IN THE WAITING ROOM DURING THE ENTIRE PROCEDURE, and drive the patient home.
  4. Patients with ASTHMA or other BREATHING PROBLEMS must bring inhaler(s) with them the day of surgery.
  5. If you take prescription medicines please check with the doctor prior to surgery.
  6. No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, you should stop smoking at least 1 day prior to surgery. Smoking inhibits healing and may lead to complications.
  7. Day of surgery:   *No contact lenses    *No dark nail polish  No tongue/facial piercings or jewelry
  8. Please wear sneakers or well fitting shoes that tie (no flip flops, sandals, or loose slippers)
  9. Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves that may be rolled up so that monitoring equipment may be correctly positioned.
  10. The recovery period from intravenous/general anesthesia varies from patient to patient. Expect to remain in our recovery room until the treating doctor releases you.
  11. If you have an illness or have had a recent illness such as a cold, sore throat, flu, or upset stomach, please notify the office prior to your surgery date.  In most instances, your procedure under IV sedation or general anesthesia will be deferred for two weeks after resolution of all signs or symptoms of a respiratory illness.  This will give your lungs ample time to return to a normal physiologic state.

  12. Please be advised for the first 24 hours following surgery it is recommended to:
  • Rest the day of surgery and the next day
  • Refrain from driving
  • Abstain from operating machinery
  • Avoid mixing alcohol and prescribed pain medication
